Q. We’re very excited to welcome on to the show today Ami Badani, Chief Marketing Officer of Arm. … Can you start by breaking down Arm’s role in the AI ecosystem and how you see that role evolving over the next year or so?
If you think about Arm, we’ve been a company that’s been around for the better half of the last several decades, probably 35, 40 years. And if you think about our role in the AI ecosystem, we are the foundational compute platform for AI. That means we span cloud/data center, edge, physical AI, used in pretty much every CPU. And CPUs are the brain of your computer.
We’re probably the most pervasive platform. We have 350 billion devices. So more devices than the cumulative number of humans to have ever lived on this planet. And we have a huge software ecosystem, 22 million software developers.
We power almost every digital device that you interact with, whether that’s your phone, your thermostat, your car, your PC, your connected watch, to the cloud.
We have two business models. One is we license our IP for others to create custom chips, major companies like Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, etc. We have a royalty structure not dissimilar to the music industry. So every Arm-based device that is shipped, we get a royalty on the back of that.
And then in March, we expanded our business model to now sell our own chips, our own CPU chips for the data center. It’s called the Arm AGI CPU. It’s great at running all these agentic workloads, from coding to personal assistants. We’re pretty much the underpinning of everything that’s happening in AI right now.
Q. Congratulations on your recent trip to China for Arm Everywhere and Arm Connect China. … Can you provide some highlights and hint at what’s next for Arm within the Chinese market?
We’re a global company. Innovation is really happening everywhere. AI requires performance and energy efficiency; these are global requirements. … The pace of innovation in China is incredible. When I was there, I saw package delivery drones, obviously open-weight models, autonomous vehicles.
The ecosystem in China is so eager to use Arm’s compute platform to deliver differentiated products to market. … We want to drive innovation forward, not only in service to China, but really the global economy.
One of the things that really stood out to me was this focus on physical AI: how China in particular is moving from the digital to the physical world. … We’ve been in automotive for a long, long time. Performance, real-time reliability, safety are all core to Arm’s platform. We’re extending a lot of that into robotics, humanoids, etc.
Q. Arm highlighted a partnership with Nvidia during Computex earlier this year. What can you tell us about its importance and where it might go?
Nvidia has been a long-time and super important partner. I actually came from Nvidia to Arm. Our CEO, Rene Haas, came from Nvidia too.
Almost all of their products, from the data center, whether it’s Vera Rubin or the BlueField data processing unit, to their robotics portfolio, Jetson, to now their PC portfolio, the RTX Spark, are using Arm’s compute platform. … It’s a system-level challenge where power-efficient compute is super important.
RTX Spark is an agentic PC. It’s great for AI developers using AI harnesses, for creators, for gamers. The CPU inside is built on Arm. It’s a Windows-on-Arm device, so we’ve worked closely with Microsoft and Nvidia.
Q. What would you say is the defining trait of this new era of AI, and what makes Arm uniquely positioned to benefit? You have the data center royalties business and the new chip business.
0:00 And you know when I think about this AI revolution, I’ve seen many over the course of my career. This is the biggest revolution that we’ve ever seen in history.
0:08 And the dynamics of this are much much different. It’s obviously much faster and it’s touching more industries simultaneously.
0:19 So the outcomes can be great. You know, we talk a lot about accelerating scientific discovery, equitable education, improving human productivity, accelerating GDP growth,
0:27 and that’s all great for ARM because everything that we talk about in terms of the outcomes of which this AI revolution will be able to achieve, it needs more power efficient compute. Everything more needs more power efficient compute.
And so, ARM is really at the intersection of being able to enable all of these new industries simultaneously.
The economics of this also look very different from past revolutions. So in the dotcom era, you sort of had to build supply for then demand to come online. So it was very lumpy.
With AI, the demand is already there. We’re seeing it. It’s really a constraint around supply. We can’t supply enough compute fast enough.
And so this, for us, is an exciting opportunity, since all of this innovation requires power-efficient compute. Being able to deliver this efficiently will be critical for us to scale to where we want, in terms of our hopes, dreams and aspirations for all the great outcomes we expect with this AI revolution.
AI isn't just about software anymore: physical AI is the next frontier.
We sat down with @Arm CMO Ami Badani to discuss robotics, autonomous vehicles, NVIDIA partnerships, and why power-efficient computing is becoming critical to the AI boom.
Which area of physical AI has the most potential?
